The wine estate

The soil
The estate occupies some six hectares. The vines grow on sediments with a very high clay content, deposited against the moraines by Ice Age glaciers. The only rocky deposits are found higher up and around the edges of the depressions in the ground which existed at that time. The soil is rich in magnesium, calcium and potassium.

The micro-climate
Protected by the neighbouring woods and sheltered by the hills, the vineyards thrive in this low-altitude (150 metres) environment.

The grape varieties
Traditional Piedmontese varieties such as Arneis, Barbera and Brachetto give excellent results. Winegrowers are always assessing the feasibility of adopting new varieties.

The quality
The general production conditions in the vineyards are based on the ‘Integrated Production’ guidelines formulated by the University of Applied Sciences in Waedenswil, Switzerland. ‘Integrated Production’ is a system whereby Mother Nature is employed to her full potential with as little human interference as possible. Much love, experience and care are lavished on the vines, and the grapes are processed in the gentlest possible manner. Here at Cantina Pizio, this approach yields characterful, high-quality varietal wines.
